‘Wandering One Day’

December 2021 - February 2022

Adrian Edwards is an artist. He works methodically and with resolve. He continues to constantly evolve and explore his craft while visually interpreting his surroundings.

Edwards works in his studio in Upton Cross, a small village in the south west of England. Located at the foot of Bodmin Moor, which has one of the five granite plutons in Cornwall that make up part of the Cornubian batholith, the light and space in and around this area offer a dramatic subject matter with distant, frequently changing skies. It is a place with a rugged and stark historic landscape.

Wandering one day is a collection of images that help us to understand how the artist thinks and works. It includes a number of observational studies which Edwards’ has made on site. The works often use highly skilled yet seeming rudimentary marks on scrap paper or card-stock. They are vibrant and immediately tell us that the artist is more concerned with documenting the viscerality than simply attempting to create a quick and complete, plein air artwork.

This exhibition also features a selection of the artists’ final pieces. These works illustrate Edwards as a highly skilled painter who, with an almost monastic-like work ethic, has spent decades honing his abilities. The ease at which Edward’s mixes colour and moves paint are extraordinary and allow the viewer to experience timeless moments. These moments are stolen from Edwards’ days wandering within the confines of his surroundings where he is most at home.

My current practice is the exploration and recording of nature and human forms using a range of materials. I sometimes work for extended periods through my sketch/note books, frequently revisiting, rearranging and sorting as a means to create finished works.
